ROBERT JAMES REID, OAM, PHF

My business life commenced in 1955 working at the Head Office of the ANZ Bank in Sydney and eventually working at branch level. In 1957 I changed career path and commenced work with the Australia Gas light company in their data processing division and working with the first commercial IBM computer being a punch card system. In 1961 was a successful applicant in the same data processing field as Data processing manager for Speedo International the worlds leading swimwear manufacturer. After several years in that position, I was asked to head the Export division of the company as their first export manager and subsequently travelled the world dealing with agents and Licensees.

In 1973 I commenced my own career in retailing with 3 stores; one in Parramatta and two in Balmain, and in 1973 purchased the Medlow Bath General Store and Post Office and subsequently moved to the Blue Mountains in 1975.

In 1977 I brought back to life The Chalet Guesthouse and established the restaurant as well which my wife Irene and I ran for 8 years, selling in 1985 and purchased the Victoria and Albert Guesthouse in Mt. Victoria. It became affectionately nicknamed “The V&A”. which we restored and it became a wonderful wedding and conference venue as well as a guesthouse. Sold the V&A in 1992 as excessively high interest rates over 20% made it difficult to trade. Ever since then we general managed various mountains properties until retirement in 2008.
